The latest dream of architect Simone Micheli has taken shape and become reality at 1300 m. above sea ​​level. Terme Alte di Rivisondoli, a recently opened spa and wellness facility, expresses excitement, rigor and simplicity. Fully integrated with the wild nature of the Abruzzo mountains—still little known despite their rare beauty—Terme Alte is a project not only of aesthetic refinement, but also of intelligence and strategic design and communication. Set in a natural corner equidistant from the tourist centers of Roccaraso, Rivisondoli and Pescocostanzo, thanks to the expressive power of its spaces and the high quality of the treatments it offers, this oasis of relaxation aspires to become a major attraction, a means for energizing, enlivening and invigorating the handsome plateau it overlooks, the ski resorts of the surrounding mountains, the nearby golf courses and equestrian club, and the cycle hiking paths and that wind through the woods that surround it on three sides. Here Micheli has transformed his vision into a project of excellence and acumen. Exemplary in its approach, it reaches beyond the concept of eco-logical and eco-nomic sustainability, taking as its aim not a seemingly satisfying balance of the status quo, but the enrichment of the territory itself, the enhancement of the natural and human resources that are there but, until now, have been poorly developed. A will hidden at the very heart of the Terme Alte: the sulphurous waters of a spring located in the adjacent forest, discovered, nurtured and studied by Dr. Luigi Altamura, whose professional distinction and unceasing determination and passion have brought them to the forefront of the national stage. The waters of the baths, sulfurous by nature, are in fact rich in an enzyme that helps significantly to counter the effects of aging, guaranteeing an exfoliating action on surface skin layers and acting on deep layers to promote the production of important constituent elements that enable the skin to fulfill its protective function properly. The spa offers treatments and therapy sessions that take full advantage of the beneficial properties of the spring water and the mud it contains, and so is the perfect place to cultivate the well-being of body and mind. A place of architectural spells and charms as well, poised between the surreal and the dreamlike: lighting effects, scents, colors, transparencies and improbable geometries characterize this ​​three-dimensional realm suspended between dream and reality—effects by which we humans can be stimulated synaesthetically, and our visit, our use and enjoyment of the spaces, given a sense of unicity. The spaces open up and revolve around the large double volume of the lounge bar, where we are received and entertained, then encouraged to circulate to the other areas. The adjacent shop, set at the side of the entrance, where we can see and buy a wide range of products made with the thermal water and its muds, is its natural continuation and anticipation. Showcases that seem suspended, floating on a halo of blue light, guide us with their soft shapes and winking LEDs to the central meeting place, teeming with life, dynamic and constantly moving. The sense of flow is underlined by the seating, which is reduced to spheres that appear to slide freely between the shaped logs that form the tables in the ground-floor lounge bar. Two large walls, entirely faced with wood planks, warm our view and embrace us, the stone floor enhancing the natural, yet extraordinary, almost magical atmosphere in which the blue sky of the ceiling, a counterpoint to the azure spheres on the floor, seems to be supported and pierced by surreal yellow trees with sharp, upward-reaching macro-thorns. From above, a large window overlooks the double-height space of the bar, concealing the most secret, silent zone of the center: the spa, which occupies the whole second floor of the building. Glass etched with a transparent texture of thorns and twisted branches conceals and confounds the profiles of those approaching the stairs on the ground floor and walking through the sauna on the first floor. A large suspended fireplace opens up in the middle of the ground floor window-wall, the fire catching the attention of passers by, together with the long shadows of the columns and their thorns projected on the ceiling. A surreal atmosphere based on light and its reflections, like the reflections in the mirrored cabinet that holds a large monitor and hides the coffee machine from view, envelopes the materiality of the bar, a monolithic block clothed, in continuity with the adjacent walls, in wooden planks. Shelves, and elliptical windows and portholes, all rigorously shiny yellow and perfect in their simple geometries, float on uncertain walls of rough plaster—gritty, tactile and extremely powerful, like walls of rough rock. The contrast between the irregular and natural materials, such as the stone floor laid in strips of various sizes, the wood planks lining the walls, or the coarse grainy plaster, and the furnishings, marked out by clean geometries, lacquered to a shiny finish or mirrored, and the brightly colored, thorny columns, creates an unrepeatable singularity, a surreal transfiguration of a mountain environment dreamt of, remembered, imagined. The same powerful contrast characterizes the stairs, the walkways in the spa and the treatment rooms. The walls, illuminated by grazing light from the floor up, or by the blue LED strips of mirrors suspended in midair, reveal a rich articulation of matter; the treatment beds shine, white and ethereal, in the middle of the rooms, suspended beneath a blue ceiling, a pocket-sized sky. Each room is equipped with two separate showers, one with normal water and one with thermal water, so that clients after a massage or a beauty treatment can boost the session’s effectiveness with a spa shower. A special place among the center’s treatment offerings is entrusted, thanks to the beneficial effects of the thermal water, to the round bath, a central element and fulcrum of the spa’s layout. Around the pool of sulphurous water, which is naturally odorless, contrary to what one might think, are set the Turkish bath, the sauna, the experience showers and the relaxation room. If the Turkish bath, bright and ambitious in its geometry and its solid-surface seating, playfully reveals itself to view through a large porthole that opens directly onto the entrance to the spa, the sauna appears instead reserved and discreet, and can be reached only at the end of a pathway bathed by showers resembling waterfalls along a mountain trail. A huge jet in the shape of an enormous blue boulder, metaphysically hung from the ceiling, reveals unexpected and original experiences, just as the blue eye, suspended in midair on a rough wall, hides a heart of ice ready for use at the end of a Turkish bath or a long hot shower. At the end of the path, in a strategic position with a large windows offering a spectacular view over the plateau, in the winter months completely covered with snow, lies the relaxation room. The thoughtful, clever lighting design, combined with the diffusion of fragrances and music especially chosen for the project, render unique and unrepeatable the experience of this room and of the entire spa. A spa designed not only to meet the “canonical” needs of medical and beauty treatments, of health and wellbeing, relaxation and regeneration, but also to become—during the day but especially at night—a venue where clients can get together, drink an aperitif or enjoy traditional Abruzzo cuisine or those low-calorie dishes that are more closely connected to the spa’s wellness programs; where they can listen to music, or dance; a place where they can stimulate their senses, alter their perceptions, not through the use of drugs or alcohol, but by living in an intense way a story of space that is inimitable and ever-changing. Terme Alte makes to concession to the rhetorical imitation of nature, but absorbs nature’s essence, spontaneity and power, and delivers it in a supernatural dream representation of lights and shapes, space and matter.

Le Terme Alte di Rivisondoli, stabilimento di benessere termale di recente apertura, esprimono effervescenza, rigore e semplicita’. Perfettamente integrato nella natura selvaggia e, nonostante la rara bellezza, ancora poco conosciuta, delle montagne abruzzesi, Terme Alte costituisce un progetto, non solo di raffinata ricerca estetica, ma anche di intelligenza e strategia progettuale e comunicativa. Oasi di relax, incastonata in un angolo naturale, equidistante dai 3 centri turistici Roccaraso, Rivisondoli e Pescocostanzo, punta a diventare, grazie alla sua potenza espressiva e all’estrema qualità degli spazi, nonché dei trattamenti e delle cure offerte, uno strumento di amplificazione e di forte richiamo, in grado di rianimare, smuovere e dinamicizzare il bellissimo altopiano su cui si apre, gli impianti sciistici delle montagne limitrofe, i vicini campi da golf ed il circolo ippico, le piste ciclabili e da trekking che si snodano tra i boschi che la circondano su tre lati. Una visione,  quella dell’arch. Micheli che diviene progetto di eccellenza e di intelligenza, esemplare nell’approccio che va oltre al concetto di sostenibilità, eco-logica ed eco-nomica, per puntare, non ad un apparentemente appagante equilibrio dello status quo, bensì all’arricchimento del territorio stesso, al potenziamento delle risorse naturali e non, presenti e, ad oggi, ancora scarsamente valorizzate.

Una volontà nascosta nel cuore stesso delle Terme Alte: le acque solfuree, provenienti da una sorgente situata nel bosco adiacente, scoperte, curate e studiate dal Dott. Luigi Altamura che è stato in grado, con grande professionalità ma anche con un enorme sforzo di volontà e di passione, di renderle una realtà nazionale. Le acque delle terme, solfuree per natura, sono infatti ricche di un enzima che partecipa in modo sensibile a contrastare gli effetti dell’invecchiamento, garantendo un’azione esfoliante sugli strati superficiali della pelle e agendo attivamente sugli strati profondi promuovendo la produzione di importanti costituenti cutanei che permettono alla stessa di poter svolgere correttamente la sua funzione di protezione. Le terme possono offrire così trattamenti estetici e sedute terapeutiche che sfruttano le proprietà benefiche dell’acqua termale e del fango in essa contenuto trasformando lo stabilimento nel luogo ideale per il benessere del corpo e della mente. Luogo fatto di magie e di incanti architettonici, in bilico tra il surreale e l’onirico. Effetti di luce, di profumi, di colori, di trasparenze, di improbabili geometrie connotano questo ambito tridimensionale sospeso tra sogno e realta’. Effetti in grado di stimolare sinesteticamente l’umano viaggiatore e rendere unica la visita, la fruizione, il godimento di questi spazi. Spazi che si aprono e ruotano intorno al grande doppio volume del lounge bar, spazio di accoglienza, intrattenimento e distribuzione dei vari ambienti. La boutique adiacente, che si apre di lato all’ingresso, in cui sono esposti ed è possibile acquistare tutti i prodotti realizzati grazie all’acqua termale e ad i suoi fanghi, ne è la naturale prosecuzione, nonché anticipazione. Vetrine che sembrano sospese, fluttuando su di un alone di luce blu, ci guidano con le loro forme morbide ed i loro ammiccamenti led, verso il luogo di incontro centrale, brulicate di vita, dinamico e in continuo movimento. Ne sono testimonianza le sedute che, ridotte a delle sfere, sembrano poter scivolare liberamente tra i tronchi sagomati che sono i tavolini del lounge bar del piano terra. Due grandi pareti, completamente rivestite in tavole di legno ci riscaldano la vista e ci avvolgono, il pavimento in pietra ricuce un’atmosfera naturale, eppure straordinaria, quasi magica, in cui il cielo azzurro dei controsoffitti, contrappunto delle sfere a terra azzurre anch’esse, sembra sorretto e trafitto da surreali alberi gialli con macro spine appuntite che si protendono verso l’alto. Dall’alto una grande vetrata, che si affaccia sullo spazio in doppio volume del bar, nasconde invece la zona più segreta, silenziosa del centro: la spa che si sviluppa per tutta la sua interezza al secondo piano dell’edificio. Vetri acidati, con una trama trasparente di spine e di rami intrecciati, scherma e confonde i profili di chi si avvicina alle scale al piano terra e di chi percorre il percorso verso la sauna al primo piano. Un grande camino sospeso, si apre a metà della vetrata del piano terra, il fuoco cattura l’attenzione di chi gli passa vicino così come fanno le ombre, delle spine e dei pilastri, che si proiettano lunghe sui soffitti. In un’atmosfera surreale, fatta di luci e di riflessioni, come quelle del carter a specchio che ospita un grande monitor e che nasconde la vista della macchina del caffé, si mescola la matericità del bancone del bar, unico blocco monolitico, rivestito, in continuità con le pareti adiacenti, in tavole di legno. Mensole, vetrine ellittiche ed oblò, tutti rigorosamente di colore giallo lucido e perfetti nelle loro geometrie essenziali, galleggiano su pareti incerte, rivestite con un intonaco grezzo, granuloso, estremamente tattili e potenti, come scabre pareti di roccia. Il contrasto tra i materiali naturali ed irregolari quali la pietra del pavimento, posata a listelli con dimensioni variabili, il legno in tavole di rivestimento delle pareti, l’intonaco grezzo e granuloso, e gli arredi, disegnati da geometrie pulitissime, laccati lucidi o a specchio, i pilastri rivestiti con spine e dalla sgargiante colorazione, creano un unicum irripetibile, surreale trasfigurazione di una montagna sognata, ricordata, immaginata. Anche le scale, i percorsi della spa e le cabine trattamento sono caratterizzate da questo potentissimo contrasto. Le pareti, illuminate da luci radenti, dal basso verso l’alto, o dalle strisce led blu degli specchi sospesi a mezz’aria, rivelano un’articolazione materica ricchissima, i lettini per i trattamenti risplendono, candidi ed eterei, al centro delle sale, sospesi sotto un soffitto azzurro, un piccolo cielo tascabile. Ogni cabina è poi dotata di due distinte docce: una di acqua normale e una di acqua termale, in modo tale che i clienti dopo un massaggio o dopo un qualsiasi trattamento estetico possano rinforzare l’efficacia del trattamento appena svolto con una doccia termale. Particolare ruolo, all’interno dei percorsi di trattamento del centro, viene affidato, grazie all’utilizzo dei benefici effetti dell’acqua termale, alla vasca rotonda, elemento centrale e fulcro della distribuzione della spa. Intorno alla vasca di acqua sulfurea, che per la naturale e caratteristica composizione non emana, al contrario di quanto si pensi, forti odori, si articolano gli ambienti del bagno turco, della sauna, delle docce emozionali e della sala relax. Se il bagno turco, fulgido e rigoroso, nelle sue geometrie e nelle sue sedute in solid surface, si rivela e si lascia giocosamente guardare attraverso un grande oblò che si apre, direttamente sull’ingresso della spa, la sauna appare invece riservata e discreta, e si lascia raggiungere solo al termine di un percorso bagnato da docce come cascate d’acqua lungo un sentiero di montagna. Un enorme macro-soffione emozionale a forma di enorme macigno blu, appeso metafisicamente al soffitto, rivela inattese ed originali esperienze, così come l’occhio azzurro, sospeso a mezz’aria su una parete scabra, nasconde un cuore di ghiaccio pronto all’uso al termine di un bagno turco o di una lunga doccia bollente. Al termine del percorso, in posizione strategica che permette di godere, attraverso le sue ampie vetrate, una spettacolare vista panoramica sull’altopiano antistante, nei mesi invernali, completamente ricoperto di neve, si apre la sala relax. L’attenta e sapiente regia delle luci, unita alla diffusione di fragranze e di musiche appositamente scelte per il progetto, rendono unica ed irripetibile l’esperienza non solo di questa sala ma dell’intero centro termale. Un centro termale concepito non solo per assolvere alle “canoniche” richieste di trattamenti medici, ed estetici, rivolti al benessere e alla salute, al relax e alla rigenerazione ma anche per trasformarsi, di giorno, ma soprattutto di notte, in un luogo di ritrovo, di incontro, in cui fare l’aperitivo o cenare con  i piatti tipici della tradizione culinaria abruzzese, ma anche con quelli, a scarso contenuto calorico, più legati ai programmi benessere della spa, in un luogo in cui ascoltare della musica, ballare, in un luogo in cui poter stimolare i propri sensi, alterare le proprie percezioni, non attraverso l’uso di droghe o di alcool, ma vivendo in modo intenso un racconto spaziale inimitabile e mutevole. Un intervento, questo delle Terme Alte, che senza lasciare spazio alla retorica imitazione della natura, ne assorbe l’essenza, la spontaneità, la potenza e la trasporta in una sovrannaturale rappresentazione onirica di luci, forme, spazio, materia.
