«La conoscenza che viene acquisita con l’obbligo non fa presa nella mente. Quindi non usate l’obbligo, ma lasciate che la prima educazione sia una sorta di divertimento; questo vi metterà maggiormente in grado di trovare l’inclinazione naturale del bambino» ha scritto molti anni fa Platone, il filosofo della Grecia antica che ancora oggi costituisce il fondamento del pensiero contemporaneo. 

Molti altri sono gli autori, i saggisti, gli scrittori e i pensatori che si sono dedicati al tema dell’educazione nella storia, in quanto questa è da sempre considerata l’arma nobile con cui elevare l’animo umano. Per aprire la mente e spingerla a raggiungere territori fino a quel momento considerati ignoti. Cioè che non conosciamo ci spaventa, ci appare grande, insormontabile; ciò che comprendiamo diviene nostro, amico, compagno fraterno. L’educazione ci permette di intendere il mondo in cui viviamo, è un continuo processo inclusivo che conduce al sogno. Offre gli strumenti necessari affinché l’immaginazione possa strutturarsi e la nostra mente essere in grado di mettere in pratica ogni progetto. 

Quando all’educazione si accompagna la passione si superano i limiti dell’esistenza pratica. Se mentre imparo mi diverto non traccerò confine se non con l’intento di spingermi oltre per superarlo. 

Ho sempre creduto nell’importanza della conoscenza, nella solidità dei principi educativi. Tanto ho imparato dai miei maestri, ancor di più ho cercato di regalare ai miei figli, ai miei discepoli nel campo del fare progettuale, ai miei amici nella vita, ai miei collaboratori allo Studio. L’attività di progettazione che porto avanti ormai da più di 30 anni è sempre stata affiancata da quella educativa. Lezioni universitarie, conferenze, laboratori, workshop e academy interne sono il corollario indispensabile del mio fare, il fil rouge che sottende il tutto perché grazie al confronto sono stato capace di andare davanti. Anche quest’anno, come è accaduto nelle precedenti edizioni di Hotel Regeneration, durante il FuoriSalone 2021 che si terrà dal 5 al 10 settembre, dedicherò una porzione del mio spazio-tempo all’arte di educare, alle scuole che desidereranno essere coinvolte nel frizzante e dinamico dibattito attorno all’attualità del progetto, alla responsabilità che ogni opera generata ha nel mondo, al tentativo costante di raggiungere un grado ulteriore di bellezza.

The art of educating

“Knowledge that is acquired by obligation does not appeal to the mind. So do not use obligation, but let the first education be a kind of fun; this will put you in a better position to find the natural inclination of the child” wrote Plato many years ago, the philosopher of ancient Greece who still forms the foundation of contemporary thought. 

Many other authors, essayists, writers and thinkers have dedicated themselves to the theme of education throughout history, as it has always been considered the noble weapon with which to elevate the human soul. To open the mind and push it to reach unknown territories. What we do not know frightens us, it seems great, insurmountable; what we understand becomes ours, our friend, our brotherly companion. Education allows us to understand the world we live in, it is a continuous inclusive process that leads to dreaming. It offers the necessary tools so that the imagination can be structured and our mind be able to put every project into practice. 

When education is accompanied by passion, the limits of practical existence are overcome. If I am having fun while learning, I will not draw the line except with the intention of pushing myself to go beyond it. 

I have always believed in the importance of knowledge, in the soundness of educational principles. I have learned so much from my teachers, and I have tried to give even more to my children, to my disciples in the field of design, to my friends in life, and to my collaborators in the Studio. The design activity that I have been carrying out for more than 30 years now has always been accompanied by education. University lectures, conferences, laboratories, workshops and in-house academies are the indispensable corollary of my work, the fil rouge that underlies it all, because thanks to confrontation I have been able to go ahead. This year too, as has happened in previous editions of Hotel Regeneration, during FuoriSalone 2021, which will be held from 5 to 10 September, I will dedicate a portion of my time-space to the art of educating, to the schools that wish to be involved in the sparkling and dynamic debate on the relevance of design, on the responsibility that every generated work has in the world, on the constant attempt to achieve a further degree of beauty.
