Raffinate, ammalianti, essenziali. Le forme che caratterizzano i vasi e le lampade in vetro che ho disegnato per l’azienda Blueside sono ispirate alle donne e al progresso intellettuale che quotidianamente offrono alla società.

In un mondo che dovrebbe essere aperto, tollerante e indirizzato verso il progresso, quelli che sembravano essere diritti fondamentali dell’essere umano ormai acquisti da tempo, purtroppo, sempre più spesso, vengono messi in discussione. Tra questi ci sono i diritti delle donne, che invece di lottare per conquistare nuove libertà sono costrette a manifestare per mantenere valide le precedenti. 

Dedico da sempre particolare attenzione al ruolo che le donne svolgono nelle società perché ritengo che sia specchio di crescita intellettuale, miglioramento sociale, evoluzione della conoscenza. Quello che sta succedendo in Afghanistan è un esempio di regresso e di come democrazia e diritti non possano essere portati da una nazione l’altra ma debbano prendere forma dal cuore profondo di ciascuna società. Le donne afghane negli ultimi anni avevano fatto molti passi avanti sia dal punto di vista lavorativo sia per quanto riguarda l’istruzione. 

Secondo un report UNESCO il numero di ragazze che accedono all’istruzione primaria è passato dall’essere prossimo allo zero nel 2001 a 2.5 milioni nel 2018. Che cosa succederà adesso che il paese è tornato in mano agli studenti coranici che lo governavano opprimendo le donne, impendendo loro di uscire, di studiare, di lavorare, obbligandole a coprire volto e corpo?

I Talebani raccontano che sono cambiati all’Occidente ma hanno già mostrato al mondo la loro abilità nel  reprimere il dissenso. Vent’anni di storia, di progresso, di crescita intellettuale sono stati cancellati da violenza e armi. Confido nelle donne afghane, sono certo che grazie alla loro capacità di resistere al dolore e alla sofferenza sapranno mettere in atto una battaglia per i diritti e le libertà del popolo, facendo da apripista.

The women’s reasons 

Refined, bewitching, essential. The shapes that characterize the glass vases and lamps that I designed for the company Blueside are inspired by women and by the intellectual progress that they daily offer to society.

In a world that should be open, tolerant and directed towards progress, what seemed to be fundamental rights of the human being acquired long ago, unfortunately, are increasingly being questioned. Among these are the rights of women, who instead of struggling to win new freedoms are forced to demonstrate to keep the previous ones valid. 

I have always paid particular attention to the role that women play in society because I believe that it is a mirror of intellectual growth, social improvement, evolution of knowledge. What is happening in Afghanistan is an example of regression and of how democracy and rights cannot be brought from one nation to another but must take shape from the deep heart of each society. Afghan women in recent years had made many steps forward both in terms of work and education. 

According to a UNESCO report, the number of girls accessing primary education has gone from being close to zero in 2001 to 2.5 million in 2018. What will happen now that the country is back in the hands of the Students of Quran who ruled it by oppressing women, preventing them from going out, studying, working, forcing them to cover their faces and bodies?

The Taliban tell the West that they have changed, but they have already shown the world their ability to repress dissent. Twenty years of history, of progress, of intellectual growth have been erased by violence and weapons. I trust Afghan women, I am sure that thanks to their ability to resist pain and suffering they will be able to put up a fight for the rights and freedoms of the people, leading the way.
