Ricordo nitidamente la prima volta che ho incontrato Enzo Mari. Un grandissimo uomo oltre che uno straordinario progettista: i suoi testi hanno contribuito a formare generazioni, i suoi oggetti alla notorietà del Made in Italy nel mondo. É scomparso lunedì, ad 88 anni, ma il suo pensiero resterà indelebile nei nostri cuori e nelle nostre menti. Ciao Enzo, Grazie!

Era il 1989. Ero soltanto un ragazzo, appena laureato in architettura all’Università di Firenze. La fiera Abitare il Tempo di Verona, a quel tempo, era un crogiolo di iniziative, creatività, innovazione e talento. I promettenti giovani progettisti avevano l’occasione di incontrare i grandi maestri dell’architettura e del design e di confrontarsi con loro. 

Io ero lì, ancora inesperto ma desideroso di fare. Disegnai un oggetto per l’esibizione promossa dalla Regione Lazio. Enzo arrivò, visitò con attenzione la mostra e si fermò a chiacchierare con me: le sue parole mi diedero forza, desiderio di osare, coraggio. Mi colpì la sua forte carica emotiva ed il suo acuto ed stimolante piglio intellettuale mi regalò entusiasmo!

Ho incontrato Enzo molte altre altre volte nella mia vita, ognuna delle quali si è trasformata in meraviglia intellettuale, in profondo arricchimento. 

Ho sempre apprezzato Enzo per il suo limpido e pungente pensiero. Abbiamo perso una grande persona ma non è scomparsa, la sua coscienza è quella che alimenta la creatività e l’innovazione nel processo di progettazione e non cesserà più di esistere.

I remember clearly the first time I met Enzo Mari. A great man, as well as an extraordinary designer. His texts contributed to form generations, his objects to the fame of Made in Italy in the world. He passed away on Monday, at the age of 88, but his way of thinking will remain indelible in our hearts and minds. Goodbye Enzo, Thank you!

It was 1989. I was a boy, just graduated in architecture at the University of Florence. The exhibition Abitare il Tempo in Verona, at that time, was a melting pot of initiatives, creativity, innovation, and talent. Promising young designers had the opportunity to meet the great masters of architecture and design and to measure with them. 

I was there, still inexperienced but eager to do. I designed an object for the exhibition promoted by the Lazio Region. Enzo arrived, carefully visited the exhibition, and stopped to talk with me: his words gave me strength, desire to dare, courage. I was struck by his strong emotional charge, and his sharp and stimulating intellectual attitude gave me enthusiasm!

I have met Enzo many other times in my life, each of which has turned into intellectual wonder and deep enrichment.

I’ve always appreciated Enzo for his clear and biting mindset. We have lost a great person but he has not disappeared, his conscience is what feeds creativity and innovation in the design process and will never stop existing.
